Veneers - the perfect solution for a flawless smile
Getting veneers is one of the most popular, effective, and simple ways to make your dream of a perfect smile come true. These thin ceramic shells will help you achieve the ideal shape, color, size, and symmetry of your teeth, and modern digital technologies in cosmetic dentistry allow them to be placed in just a few clinic visits.
The dentists at “Club 32” - a family dental clinic in the Holosiivskyi district of Kyiv - have a portfolio filled with successful cases of veneer placement for patients of all ages.
We offer a personalized approach to each patient, creating a treatment plan that fully aligns with your clinical situation and preferences. This ensures maximum comfort during treatment and long-lasting results.
What Are Veneers?
The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD) defines them as follows: a thin porcelain plate used to restore the natural appearance of teeth, possessing strength and durability comparable to natural tooth enamel. By "natural appearance," we mean creating a snow-white smile with the ability to choose the shape and size of the teeth, and the role of porcelain is often fulfilled by E-max ceramic.
These thin plates are custom - made for each tooth, bonded to the front surface of the teeth, and help conceal aesthetic imperfections such as chips, unevenness, discoloration of the enamel, and gaps between teeth. Visually, these ceramic plates are indistinguishable from natural teeth. The only difference is that you choose their shape, color, and size - not nature.
Types of Veneers
Ceramic
The most common type, quite strong and durable. They provide excellent aesthetics and functionality for the dentition.
Composite
Installed in a single clinic visit, they do not require tooth preparation, impressions, or laboratory work. However, calling these products “veneers” is somewhat of a stretch. In fact, they are composite restorations with a lifespan of no more than 5 years. Moreover, they will look truly good for about a year, after which they will become dull.
Lumineers
Ultra-thin ceramic plates that can be installed “turnkey” without grinding the tooth. This is a very trendy technology for creating a perfect smile. The cost of such products is significantly - on average three times - higher than that of ceramic ones. Additionally, due to their extremely thin thickness (0.2–0.3 mm), they require a straight dental arch. That is, if a patient has misaligned teeth and wants to get lumineers, the bite must first be corrected, which will significantly increase the total cost of treatment. Therefore, in such cases, we recommend classic ceramic alternatives.
Veneers on a refractor
Another type of ultra-thin veneers that require virtually no tooth preparation. The price for such ceramic veneers in Kyiv and other cities in Ukraine is usually twice as high as for standard ceramic ones, but installing them can address any aesthetic concerns. For example, correcting the shape of a tooth’s corner or thinning the cutting edge of the front teeth. This is very useful, as we subconsciously determine a person’s age by the transparency of the cutting edge of their front teeth. The only thing they cannot do is change the color of your smile: the veneers are so thin that your natural tooth will show through them, so they can only alter the shade.
Indications for Veneers
Most patients want to get veneers on their own to fulfill their dream of a perfect “Hollywood” smile.
In such cases, indications include
- Abnormal shape of one or more teeth
- Darkening or uneven enamel color
- Gaps or spaces between teeth
- Chips and cracks on the teeth
- Minor misalignment of the teeth
But in addition to this, ceramic veneers can also address certain clinical issues.
For example, by placing them on the upper, lower, or both jaws, a patient can correct certain types of malocclusion without braces or aligners.
By choosing this orthodontic treatment option, patients can address several issues at once at an affordable price: they straighten their teeth, achieve a perfect smile, and avoid having to wear orthodontic appliances for several years.
Another common use case is when multiple teeth in the smile zone are damaged by cavities. Of course, this problem can be resolved with standard fillings. However, while placing veneers on the front teeth in such cases increases the cost of treatment, it ensures a perfectly beautiful smile for many years to come.
Contraindications for Veneer Placement
Unfortunately, not everyone can achieve their dream smile by bonding ceramic veneers to their teeth. Contraindications include:
- severe tooth decay (in this case, we recommend aesthetic metal-free or zirconia crowns)
- bruxism (teeth grinding during sleep)
- complex cases of malocclusion
- thin enamel
- active gum disease
The final decision on whether veneers can be placed is made by the prosthodontist. During the consultation, they will conduct all necessary examinations and suggest the best way to improve the aesthetics of your smile.
Advantages of veneers
- Perfect aesthetics
- Minimally invasive placement
- Resistance to staining
- Long-lasting
Lifespan of veneers
Lifespan, like cost, depends primarily on the material from which they are made. Ceramic veneers last on average 10 to 15 years, and with perfect care, they can last up to 20 years.
Composite veneers last much shorter. A maximum of 5 years, though they will look truly good for no more than a year. The fact is that, unlike dental ceramics, composite material is prone to discoloration. Therefore, the ideal whiteness of such products is very short-lived.
Features of Veneer Care
Above all, these restorations are vulnerable to localized stress. In practice, this means just two restrictions: do not bite through string and do not hold nails between your teeth.
Daily hygiene is not much different from caring for your natural teeth; the only serious restriction is the prohibition on using abrasive (whitening) toothpastes and powders. Their particles can damage the ceramic surface. It is also recommended to use a soft-bristled toothbrush and replace dental floss with an irrigator. This will protect the bonding areas between the tooth and the veneer from unnecessary stress.
And, of course, you should visit a dental hygienist twice a year. Since ceramic veneers protect the tooth only from the front, it would be a real shame to develop cavities on the back surface of a “Hollywood” tooth due to poor hygiene.
A Test Drive of Veneers
To ensure you are 100% satisfied with your new smile, at “Club 32” we have modified the standard procedure and introduced an additional step - a test drive.
It helps bridge the delicate gap between the client’s and the manufacturer’s preferences, and also allows the patient to actively participate in designing their future smile.
Here’s how it works.
- We take impressions of the natural teeth and send them to the lab. There, they are scanned, and a technician overlays several veneer options from a standard library onto the resulting image, then sends us screenshots
- Our prosthodontist uses the specialized Digital Smile Design software to overlay these screenshots onto the patient’s photos
- A model of the option selected by the patient is printed on a 3D printer
- The prosthodontist takes impressions of them and fills them with plastic for temporary crowns
- The impressions are placed on the future owner of the “Hollywood smile” and kept in place for two minutes
As a result, the patient’s teeth now feature a model of their future dream smile. This is a prototype that the patient will refine to perfection together with our dentist.
For example, after wearing the model for a week and carefully examining himself in the mirror, the patient decides that he wants the first and second teeth to be larger, and the fifth, on the contrary, smaller. We use composite resin and a drill to fulfill these wishes. A week later, the patient changes his mind and decides to do the opposite. We fulfill these requests - and this continues until the patient says they are completely satisfied with the look of their smile.
After that, we take impressions of the perfect smile and adjust the teeth in terms of volume.
An additional advantage of this approach is the extreme precision of enamel reduction through the plastic.
We know in advance the thickness of the future veneer (about 0.5 mm) and cut the plastic to exactly that depth. Then we remove the plastic and determine which teeth remain untouched - they won’t need to be ground down; those that were cut all the way through the 0.5 mm will need to be ground down. After preparing the teeth, impressions are taken again.
Both sets of impressions are sent to the lab, where a technician casts models and fabricates ceramic plates that precisely replicate the tooth shape chosen by the patient; we then bond them in place and send the satisfied patient off to smile at the world and take selfies.
Make your dream of a perfect smile come true with us, and you’re guaranteed to be happy with the result.
