Orthopantomogram

Orthopantomogram - accurate diagnosis without unnecessary radiation exposure
An orthopantomogram, or dental X-ray, shows a complete picture of the location of all teeth, the condition of bone tissue, maxillary sinuses, and hidden areas of inflammation. This helps the doctor make an accurate diagnosis and determine further treatment.
The procedure takes 20-30 seconds, and the radiation dose is so minimal that it is not harmful — a person receives a higher dose of radiation by spending several hours in the sun. That is why orthopantomograms are recommended for children aged 5 and older and all adults. Club 32 has modern digital equipment for your safety and quality of treatment.

Orthopantomogram of teeth: what it is and why it is needed

An orthopantomogram is a digital panoramic (2D) image of the teeth that provides a complete picture of the condition of the dentition. This examination method allows the doctor to assess the condition of both jaws, temporomandibular joints, dental arches, and maxillary sinuses in moderate detail.

Historically, this type of examination has sometimes been referred to as a jaw orthogram, jaw orthopantomography, or OPTG image.

In dentistry, this type of examination is prescribed when the doctor needs to see the complete picture of the condition of the dentofacial system, rather than a fragment, as in targeted X-rays.

Most often, OPTG is prescribed:

  • Before starting treatment — to assess the overall condition of the teeth and bones (the presence of hidden carious cavities, inflammation, cysts, tumors)
  • In therapeutic dentistry — to diagnose periodontitis, granulomas, cysts, and assess the condition of the roots
  • In orthopedics — before prosthetics to check the condition of the supporting teeth
  • In surgery — before removing complex, impacted, or displaced teeth (especially wisdom teeth)
  • In implantology — to assess the volume and condition of the bone before installing implants
  • In orthodontics — to determine the number, position, and eruption of teeth, and to identify impacted or supernumerary teeth
  • In pediatric dentistry — to monitor the formation of permanent teeth and bite

Specialists at Club 32, a family dental clinic in the Holosiivskyi district of Kyiv, use orthopantomograms as a mandatory part of diagnostics in many clinical cases. This is because a high-quality panoramic dental image (OPT) allows complications to be avoided and helps doctors make decisions that make treatment as safe and effective as possible.

We always make every effort to preserve your teeth and restore their functionality and aesthetics. If necessary, you can have an OPTG taken right here at our clinic at a reasonable price.

In addition, you can pay for the examination and treatment in installments without any extra charges.

We do everything we can to make your treatment effective, affordable, and comfortable.

Why do you need an orthopantomogram?

This type of dental diagnosis helps to identify hidden inflammation, caries under fillings, cysts, improper growth of wisdom teeth, and other pathologies. An orthogram of the jaw is mandatory when preparing for braces, implants, or prosthetics. It is also necessary for problematic tooth extraction and before starting any serious treatment.

Advantages and disadvantages of panoramic dental X-rays (OPTG)

Advantages:

– coverage of the entire dentofacial system in a single image;

– minimal radiation exposure;

– high speed;

– Convenient data storage and analysis;

Disadvantages: slight image distortion and insufficient detail for soft tissue assessment are possible. Sometimes targeted radiography is required in addition. There are cases when a doctor prescribes a CT scan instead of an OPTG.

How an orthopantomogram is performed

The procedure takes 3–5 minutes. The patient removes metal objects and stands in the machine. The head is fixed in place, and the jaws are slightly closed. The machine makes a circular motion, forming an image. It is completely painless and comfortable. The result is available immediately.

How to prepare for a panoramic dental X-ray (OPTG)

No special preparation is required. You need to remove your glasses, earrings, and necklaces. Pregnant women should inform the doctor of their condition.

At our clinic, patients always receive detailed recommendations and attentive care from our staff at all stages of the examination. Our specialists guarantee patients peace of mind and safety.
