How a teleradiograph is performed
Patient preparation:
- The patient comes to the X-ray room without metal jewelry, earrings, hair clips, glasses — all of these must be removed
- They are explained the procedure and asked not to move during the scan
Positioning
The patient is placed in a special stand (teleradiograph) that fixes the head in the desired position:
- Lateral projection (most common) — the left or right side of the head is turned toward the image receiver
- Frontal projection (face-on) — the face is directed straight at the receiver
- The head is fixed with the help of a forehead and chin rest or ear clamps
- The patient is asked to close their teeth in their normal bite position and not to swallow during the scan
- In some cases, the patient is asked to inhale and hold their breath for a few seconds
Image:
- The X-ray operator moves behind the protective barrier
- X-ray radiation is turned on—the exposure lasts less than a second
- This produces a highly accurate 1:1 image of the skull, which is immediately transferred to a computer for analysis
The entire procedure, including preparation, takes up to 10 minutes.
