Cephalometric X-ray

Cephalometric X-ray of teeth is a safe and comfortable procedure for patients. Images are taken in frontal and lateral projections for planning and monitoring orthodontic treatment, as well as for planning treatment with a surgeon or prosthodontist. This diagnostic method provides a complete picture for assessing the condition of the soft tissues of the face and the temporomandibular joint, allowing for the detection of anomalies and assessment of bone tissue thickness. The entire procedure takes a few minutes, and the imaging itself takes a couple of seconds.

Frequently asked questions

What is a cephalometric X-ray?

It is a panoramic skull image in front or side projection. It's necessary for precise orthodontic treatment planning.

Is a TRG X-ray safe?

We use modern digital equipment with minimal radiation. The procedure is safe even if repeated as prescribed by a doctor.

How long does the TRG procedure take?

The image is taken in seconds and the result is ready instantly. The doctor can start analysis immediately.

When is teleradiography needed?

Before orthodontic treatment with braces or aligners for accurate planning.

Why does an orthodontist need a TRG?

It allows evaluating tooth inclination and jaw relationship. This ensures a proper bite and aesthetic treatment result.

Cephalometric X-ray: what it is and why it is needed

Cephalometric X-ray, or teleroentgenogram (TRG) as it is also known, is a method of X-ray examination of the skull that provides a panoramic image of the head in a lateral or frontal projection, accurately accounting for the distance between the radiation source, the patient, and the image receiver. This ensures that the images have a standardized scale and can be used for accurate measurements.

In dentistry, this type of examination is used to assess symmetry, bite, and the position of the jaws and teeth. The image allows orthodontic treatment and other interventions to be planned with maximum accuracy.

Specialists at «Club 32», a family dental clinic in the Holosiivskyi district of Kyiv, use cephalometric X-ray as a standard diagnostic tool before installing braces or aligners. It is an indispensable tool for developing treatment plans for children and adults, especially for complex clinical cases.

We always make every effort to preserve your teeth and restore their functionality and aesthetics. If necessary, you can have a cephalometric X-ray image taken right here at our clinic at a reasonable price.

In addition, you can pay for examinations and treatment in installments without any extra charges.

We do everything we can to make your treatment effective, affordable, and comfortable.

The use of cephalometric X-ray in dentistry

This examination is often prescribed in preparation for orthodontic treatment. A TRG image of the teeth allows the doctor to accurately determine the direction of jaw growth, identify hidden bite disorders, and establish a reference point for correction.

In addition, cephalometric X-ray images are used for clinical tasks such as:

Orthodontics:

  • Determining the type of bite, jaw position, and tooth inclination
  • Planning orthodontic treatment (braces, aligners)
  • Performing cephalometric analysis - assessing the relationships between the jaws, skull, and soft tissues of the face
  • Monitoring treatment dynamics
  • Surgical dentistry and maxillofacial surgery
  • Assessment of symmetry and development of skull bone structures
  • Planning of operations (e.g., for congenital anomalies or injuries)
  • Prosthetics
  • Analysis of anatomical features for accurate placement of implants or prosthetic structures
  • Pediatric dentistry
  • Assessment of growth and development of the maxillofacial region
  • Early detection of malocclusion or dysplasia

Indications and contraindications for cephalometric X-ray

A cephalometric X-ray in lateral or direct projection is prescribed for malocclusion, jaw displacement, preparation for orthognathic surgery, and before orthodontic treatment. Cephalometric X-rays are also taken to monitor the treatment process and evaluate its effectiveness.

Relative contraindications include pregnancy and the inability to hold the head still.

At «Club 32» Clinic, we take all nuances into account and guarantee the safety of patients during the examination and subsequent treatment.

Types of cephalometric X-ray images

The most common type is a lateral cephalometric X-ray image, which shows the patient's profile, jaws, teeth, and nasal structures. A frontal projection is used less frequently to assess facial asymmetry and the horizontal position of the jaws. Both types are used depending on the diagnostic objectives.

Advantages of cephalometric X-ray

TRG images are highly accurate, which is especially important in orthodontics. This type of examination is non-invasive, safe, and quick to perform. Conducting this examination in dentistry allows you to compare the clinical situation before and after treatment, track the slightest changes, and adjust the treatment plan based on accurate data.

The equipment used to perform such examinations at the «Club 32» clinic ensures minimal radiation exposure and excellent image quality.

How a cephalometric X-ray is performed

Patient preparation:

  • The patient comes to the X-ray room without metal jewelry, earrings, hair clips, glasses - all of these must be removed
  • They are explained the procedure and asked not to move during the scan

Positioning

The patient is placed in a special stand (cephalometric X-ray) that fixes the head in the desired position:

  • Lateral projection (most common) - the left or right side of the head is turned toward the image receiver
  • Frontal projection (face-on) - the face is directed straight at the receiver
  • The head is fixed with the help of a forehead and chin rest or ear clamps
  • The patient is asked to close their teeth in their normal bite position and not to swallow during the scan
  • In some cases, the patient is asked to inhale and hold their breath for a few seconds

Image:

  • The X-ray operator moves behind the protective barrier
  • X-ray radiation is turned on - the exposure lasts less than a second
  • This produces a highly accurate 1:1 image of the skull, which is immediately transferred to a computer for analysis

The entire procedure, including preparation, takes up to 10 minutes.

If you are interested in a cephalometric X-ray in Kyiv or treatment using this type of examination, welcome to the «Club 32» dental clinic. We employ highly qualified and experienced specialists who use the most advanced and safe dental technologies.

We guarantee European quality, affordable prices, and friendly service.
