Sinus lift — bone restoration for reliable implantation
Everything in the body is subject to rational rules. Therefore, if an artificial tooth root (implant) is not implanted immediately after the removal of the natural tooth (single-stage implantation), the body will begin the process of bone resorption at the site of removal immediately after the socket has healed. After all, there is no longer any need to hold the tooth roots there, so why keep the extra bone tissue idle? So it is "broken down for parts." Of course, this is not a quick process, but if you delay implantation for more than a month, it becomes impossible to ensure reliable implant retention without osteoplasty (bone tissue augmentation). Most often, osteoplasty is used before implanting teeth in the upper jaw located under the maxillary sinuses. In dentistry, this procedure is performed by surgeons and is called a sinus lift. Patients sometimes use the term "sinus lift."
Sinus lifting is performed according to clear protocols: the surgeon carefully lifts the bottom of the sinus and fills the space with bone grafting material, which creates sufficient bone height for further implantation.
The surgeons at Club 32, a family dentistry clinic in the Holosiivskyi district of Kyiv, have extensive experience in performing both closed and open sinus lifts. For patients with increased anxiety or fear of such procedures, we offer treatment under sedation. It allows all medical procedures to be performed not only without pain, but also without stress.
In addition, you can pay for the cost of a turnkey sinus lift in installments and without overpaying.
With us, your treatment will be effective and comfortable.
Indications and contraindications for sinus lift procedures
Main indications:
- insufficient height of the bone tissue of the upper jaw in the lateral sections before implantation
- pronounced bone atrophy after removal of chewing teeth
- anatomically low position of the maxillary sinus
Contraindications:
- acute inflammatory diseases (acute respiratory viral infection, fever)
- Acute or chronic sinusitis in the acute stage
- severe blood clotting disorders
- decompensated diabetes mellitus
- oncological diseases in the active phase of treatment
- severe cardiovascular pathologies
- heavy smoking (increases the risk of complications and slows down healing).
Before the procedure, a CT scan is required to assess the condition of the sinuses and bone height and to select the optimal osteoplasty option.
Stages of open and closed sinus lift
Before the procedure, diagnostics are performed: examination, medical history collection, and CT scan of the upper jaw. This allows the doctor to assess the height of the bone tissue and the condition of the maxillary sinuses, after which the doctor selects the optimal treatment method:
- Closed sinus lift (transalveolar) is considered a more gentle option and is used for moderate bone tissue deficiency. Access to the surgical site is created through the bed of the future implant, without a separate "window" in the side wall of the jaw. After lifting the membrane, the doctor inserts bone material and, in many cases, immediately installs the implant itself. This method is minimally traumatic, and patients recover fairly quickly after it
- Open sinus lifting is used for severe bone tissue atrophy, when the closed method cannot provide sufficient volume increase. Access is gained through the side wall of the upper jaw: the surgeon forms a small window, lifts the sinus membrane, and fills the space with bone material. Then the area of intervention is sutured. In this case, implantation can be performed immediately or after healing and formation of new bone (usually after several months), depending on the initial clinical situation
Both methods of jaw osteoplasty are aimed at restoring the anatomically correct bone volume, which guarantees reliable retention of dental implants. It is important to understand that this procedure is not a "cosmetic" operation and is fundamentally different from a gum lift.
