Dental plate
Orthodontic plates are removable devices that are placed on one or both jaws and allow for gentle correction of tooth position and stabilization of the bite. Unlike braces, this orthodontic appliance is more delicate and is more often used for minor misalignments, crowding, rotation of individual teeth, or to maintain results after treatment.
Due to their functional characteristics, such appliances are more often used to treat children. For adult patients, dental plates may be relevant when local correction is required, as well as when orthodontic treatment with aligners is not possible or when there is a reluctance to have braces fitted.
The orthodontists at Club 32, a family dental clinic in the Holosiivskyi district of Kyiv, have many successful cases of bite correction using dental plates for both children and adults in their portfolio.
We practice an individual approach to bite correction—we develop a unique treatment plan for each patient, allowing us to install dental plates, taking into account the specifics of the clinical situation, wishes, and at an affordable price. This makes it possible to achieve maximum comfort during treatment and a long-lasting and stable result upon its completion. In addition, you can pay for the cost of bite correction in installments and without overpaying.
Types of orthodontic plates for adult teeth
Although plate appliances are more commonly associated with pediatric orthodontics, under strict indications, dental plates can also be used to correct adult bites.
The main types of these orthodontic appliances include:
- Plates with screws. These are plates for correcting the position of teeth, in which a screw mechanism gradually widens the dental arch or moves individual teeth (or a segment of the dental arch). In adults, such plates are used to a limited extent — more often for spot correction or moderate widening of the dental arch when it is narrowed.
- Plates with springs and pushers. These are used when one or more teeth need to be moved in a specific direction. Such dental plates are usually used for the targeted movement of individual teeth to avoid excessive stress on the dentition.
- Retention plates. Their task is to maintain the result after braces or aligners.
- Appliances with occlusal pads. They affect the height of the bite and help redistribute the load, which is important in cases of functional disorders.
The choice of design depends on the clinical situation, bite type, and periodontal condition.
How does a plate for aligning adult teeth work?
The mechanism of action is based on constant moderate pressure on the teeth. Since bite correction plates in adult orthodontics are mainly used for spot correction, before installing them, the doctor determines which teeth need to be moved and calculates the direction of the force.
When using plates with screws, the patient activates the mechanism according to a schedule (usually by turning a key), creating controlled pressure. If springs are present, the load is formed automatically.
It is important to understand that there are many limitations to correcting the position of teeth with orthodontic plates. The bones of an adult are less plastic than those of a child, so movement is slower and the possibilities for correction are more limited. Nevertheless, in some cases, teeth straightening plates give good results: the aesthetics of the smile improve, crowding is reduced, tooth contact is normalized, and the risk of overloading individual areas of the dentition is reduced.
When planning treatment, the condition of the enamel, the presence of fillings and crowns, and the health of the gums are taken into account. This is especially important in situations where braces are prescribed for adult patients with increased wear or overload of individual teeth.
Advantages and disadvantages of dental plates
Removable orthodontic plates for teeth have a number of obvious advantages:
- comfort in everyday life: the appliance can be removed if necessary
- simplified hygiene: it is easier to brush your teeth and maintain gum health
- more affordable than braces
- Possibility of targeted correction: for minor defects, there is no need for complex systems
However, there are also disadvantages that are important to consider:
- the result depends on discipline—if the patient forgets to wear the device, its effectiveness decreases sharply
- Tongue plates are not suitable for correcting severe malocclusion
- In the first few days, discomfort, increased salivation, and changes in diction are possible
- limited functionality – it is not always possible to completely correct the position of the teeth with such a plate
Before starting treatment at Club 32, orthodontists always conduct a detailed consultation with the patient to discuss the real possibilities of such devices.
Recommendations for caring for adult dental plates
To ensure safe treatment, it is important to care for the appliance properly.
- Cleaning the plate. After removal, rinse it with water and clean it with a soft brush and a neutral detergent. Aggressive toothpastes and boiling water are not allowed: the plastic may deform.
- Storage. Always keep the appliance in a container so that it is not damaged or lost. Do not wrap dental plates in paper napkins — they may be mistaken for trash and thrown away.
- Oral hygiene. Teeth should be brushed twice a day, with additional use of dental floss and an irrigator. This is important because wearing the device increases the risk of plaque buildup.
- Eating. It is advisable to remove the appliance before eating so as not to break any parts or contaminate the plastic.
- Check-ups with the orthodontist. Regular visits are mandatory: the doctor checks the fit, makes corrections, and changes the treatment plan if necessary.
