Acrylic dental prosthesis: an affordable solution for restoring the dental arch
Acrylic dentures are an outdated but still popular option for restoring teeth in cases of complete or partial edentulism (absence of teeth) in the upper, lower, or both jaws.
Once upon a time, this type of denture was the only option for restoring chewing function and aesthetics of the jaws. Today, there are much more modern, comfortable, and aesthetic ways to reconstruct the dentition, but thanks to its affordability, this type of prosthetics is still popular. There are several reasons for this:
- Acrylic solutions are suitable even for elderly people with severe tissue atrophy
- Acrylic is easy to repair — if the prosthesis is damaged, it can be restored without having to be completely remade. This is especially important for those looking for a practical and reliable solution at minimal cost
The orthopedists at Club 32, a family dental clinic in the Holosiivskyi district of Kyiv, have many successful cases of manufacturing similar prostheses for patients of all ages in their portfolio.
We practice an individual approach to prosthetics—we develop a unique treatment plan for each patient, allowing us to manufacture and install removable acrylic prostheses that take into account the patient's specific characteristics and wishes at an affordable price. In addition, you can pay for prosthetics in installments without any extra charges.
Types of acrylic dentures
Acrylic dentures can be full or partial.
- Full dentures are used when all teeth on one or both jaws are lost. They are fixed in place by suction and are individually tailored to the shape of the gums.
- Partial dentures are installed if the patient is missing several teeth and are attached to the remaining teeth with metal hooks called clasps.
The cost of acrylic dentures depends on the amount of work, the number of teeth being replaced, and the design features. For example, the price of a full removable acrylic denture will be lower than that of a partial denture with additional fastening elements. Therefore, you can find out the exact cost of dentures during a consultation at our clinic.
Advantages and disadvantages of acrylic dentures
The main advantages include:
- low cost compared to other types of dentures
- ease of manufacture and quick installation
- easy care and the ability to remove them yourself
- hypoallergenic properties of the material (when using high-quality acrylic)
- can be installed even with severe jawbone atrophy
However, there are also disadvantages:
- relatively short service life (3–5 years on average)
- risk of breakage if dropped
- the need for an adaptation period
- may partially cover the palate (in maxillary structures), which negatively affects the ability to taste and feel the temperature of food
Stages of installing an acrylic denture
It usually takes about two weeks to make such a denture, and four visits by the patient to the Club 32 dental clinic.
1st visit
We take impressions for the bite pads. The pads themselves are manufactured by the laboratory within a few days.
2nd visit
The patient bites down on the finished pads with their usual bite. This results in an exact copy of the bite, which is used in the laboratory to make plaster models that are checked on a special device called an occluder. Next, based on these models, wax dental saddles are formed, into which the dentures are inserted. This is, in fact, the future prosthesis, simply made of soft material.
3rd visit
Fitting of the preliminary version. If no problems are found, as is often the case, the preliminary version is sent back to the laboratory, where the wax is replaced with plastic.
4th visit
Fitting of the finished denture. Final fine adjustments and tweaks.
The specificity of removable acrylic dentures is that the patient in the chair may not always feel discomfort. Therefore, rubbing, pressure, and discomfort that appear in the first days of wearing the denture are not uncommon. In this regard, we always warn patients that they may need to come back to us several more times to eliminate any discomfort.
Thanks to modern technology and the experience of our doctors, acrylic dental prosthetics at our clinic are as comfortable as possible for the patient.
Features of caring for removable acrylic dentures
