Metal-ceramic dental bridge: a quick and reliable solution for restoring the dentition
The installation of a metal-ceramic bridge prosthesis is a time-tested orthopedic treatment technology at an affordable price. This type of prosthesis allows you to quickly restore missing teeth, both chewing teeth and those in the smile zone, while preserving the aesthetics and functionality of the dentition. Thanks to the strength of the metal frame and the natural look of the ceramic coating, metal-ceramic bridges remain a popular choice for many patients. They blend well with natural teeth in color and shape, making them virtually invisible in the mouth.
Despite the ever-increasing popularity of implants, such prostheses are quite often used to replace one or more lost teeth. This is especially true in cases where speed of treatment and minimization of cost are important.
This type of prosthesis is a structure consisting of three or more crowns made on a single frame. The two outer crowns are always placed on the supporting teeth, while the middle ones replace the lost teeth.
Naturally, the supporting teeth must be ground down beforehand in order to install the bridge. Otherwise, the crowns simply won't fit on them. That is why at Club 32, a family dental clinic in the Holosiivskyi district of Kyiv, we consider it unacceptable to install a metal-ceramic bridge prosthesis on completely healthy supporting teeth. In such situations, our orthopedists strongly recommend implants to patients. If the teeth adjacent to the "hole" are not in the best condition, then installing a dental bridge is a perfectly acceptable treatment option with a more attractive price compared to implants. In addition, this procedure is much faster and quite predictable.
Indications and contraindications for installing a metal-ceramic bridge
Indications:
- One or more consecutive teeth are missing;
- The supporting teeth at the edges of the defect are preserved, but their condition is not ideal;
- The patient wants to quickly restore chewing function and smile aesthetics;
- Implantation is impossible or has been refused
Contraindications
Inflammatory processes in the oral cavity
Installation is contraindicated in the presence of gingivitis, stomatitis, periodontitis, periostitis, and other acute inflammatory conditions. Fixing the prosthesis in the presence of infection can lead to increased inflammation and the risk of losing the supporting teeth.
Pathological enamel wear or mobility of supporting teeth
Excessive enamel wear increases the load on the structure, which reduces its service life. Significant mobility of the supporting teeth makes reliable fixation impossible — the bridge may become loose or shift. In such cases, preliminary treatment, bite stabilization, or selection of an alternative restoration method (e.g., implantation) is required.
Allergy to metal alloys used in metal-ceramic restorations
Metal-ceramic restorations are made from nickel, cobalt, chromium, and other alloys. Patients with allergic reactions to these metals may experience mucosal irritation, burning, taste changes, swelling, or inflammation. If an allergy is confirmed, it is better to use metal-free structures (pressed ceramics, zirconium).
Periodontal disease in the acute stage
Periodontitis and periodontitis in the active phase are accompanied by inflammation of the gums, loosening of the teeth, and loss of supporting bone tissue. Installing a bridge under such conditions increases the load on weakened tissues, provoking accelerated loss of supporting teeth. Prosthetics is only possible after stabilization of the periodontal status.
It should be noted that points 1 and 4 are conditional contraindications. That is, they can be eliminated. But this requires time and additional visits to the clinic. Therefore, we can only answer the question of how much a metal-ceramic bridge will cost in your case during a consultation.
Advantages and disadvantages of a bridge prosthesis
Advantages of a metal-ceramic bridge:
- High strength thanks to the metal base — withstands significant chewing loads;
- Aesthetics: the ceramic coating allows for a natural shade, especially with accurate color matching;
- Durability: with proper care, the bridge will last 10–15 years;
- Versatility: suitable for both lateral and frontal teeth;
- Affordability: metal-ceramic prostheses are cheaper than all-ceramic or zirconium ones, while maintaining a decent appearance;
- Relatively short manufacturing time — 7–10 days from preparation to installation
Disadvantages of metal-ceramic bridge prostheses:
- The need to grind down the supporting teeth, even if they are healthy — this is an irreversible procedure;
- Risk of overloading the supporting teeth, especially with long bridges (3 or more units)
- Impossibility of installation in the absence of a sufficient number of supporting teeth or their mobility — in such cases, implantation is preferable;
- Probability of gum inflammation under the bridge if hygiene is inadequate — special care products are required (irrigator, brushes);
- The metal frame may show through in people with thin gums, creating a grayish tint at the gum line;
- It is impossible to replace only one crown in case of breakage — the entire bridge must be replaced;
- Does not solve the problem of lost roots — the bone tissue under the missing tooth may atrophy over time, which does not happen when an implant is installed
Stages of manufacturing a metal-ceramic dental bridge
After a consultation, during which a decision is made to install a bridge prosthesis and the cost of treatment is determined, the process of manufacturing a dental bridge takes a couple of weeks and three visits by the patient to our clinic. During the first visit, we grind the supporting teeth and take impressions. The next time — approximately 10 days later — the patient tries on the finished prosthesis. If everything fits, we cement the prosthesis in place and the story ends. If there are any comments regarding comfort, we correct any flaws directly in the mouth and send the product to the laboratory for re-glazing. In this case, the final installation of the prosthesis is carried out during the third visit.
How a metal-ceramic dental bridge is fixed
A metal-ceramic bridge is attached to the prepared abutment teeth using dental cement. This fixation is reliable and ensures long-term use of the structure — on average, from 7 to 15 years with proper care.
Sometimes temporary cement may be used for a preliminary fitting. This allows the patient to adapt to the new structure and, if necessary, make adjustments before final fixation.
Caring for a metal-ceramic bridge
To extend the life of the bridge and maintain oral health, the following rules must be observed:
- brush your teeth twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush;
- Use an irrigator and dental floss (super floss) to clean under the bridge
- Do not bite hard objects (nuts, bones, caramel)
- Visit your dentist regularly (at least twice a year)
- Use special mouthwashes
