Metal-ceramic crowns - a time-tested technology
The installation of metal-ceramic crowns is a slightly outdated but still effective, affordable, and therefore popular method of prosthetics for both chewing and front teeth.
The design of these crowns includes a metal frame (most often cobalt-chromium alloys, less often precious metals) and a layer of ultra-strong porcelain applied to it, imitating the appearance of a natural tooth, the shade of which is selected individually.
The presence of a metal base is the main difference between metal-ceramic prostheses and all-ceramic and zirconium counterparts. Metal makes them less transparent but much more resistant to chipping. Therefore, this type of crown is optimal for the lateral areas of the dentition, especially under significant loads.
They are also suitable for patients who want to have teeth replaced in the smile zone. The exception is public figures, including bloggers. Modern standards of appearance require people in such professions to have a flawless and fashionable smile. Therefore, we offer such patients prosthetics with metal-free or zirconium crowns.
The orthopedists at Club 32, a family dental clinic in the Holosiivskyi district of Kyiv, have many successful cases of turnkey zirconium crown installation for patients of all ages in their portfolio.
We practice an individual approach to prosthetics – we develop a unique treatment plan for each patient, allowing us to manufacture and install a turnkey metal-ceramic crown, taking into account the characteristics and wishes of the patient, at an affordable price. In addition, you can pay for prosthetics in installments and without overpaying.
We will do everything to restore your comfort and self-confidence.
Advantages of metal-ceramic prostheses:
- Strength and reliability: metal-ceramic dental prostheses can withstand high chewing loads and last for 10-15 years
- Aesthetics and versatility: these prostheses are suitable for both the front and chewing areas. Metal-ceramic crowns on the front teeth are visually indistinguishable from natural teeth and meet aesthetic requirements. The exception is people in public professions. For them, we recommend metal-free and zirconium crowns
- Affordable cost
- Biocompatibility with the body
- Hygienic and able to retain their natural color when exposed to staining substances (coffee, tea, etc.)
Indications and contraindications for installing a metal-ceramic crown on a tooth
The main indication for installing crowns is significant destruction of the crown part of the tooth as a result of caries or trauma.
It is also recommended to cover teeth with crowns after endodontic treatment. This should be done within 3 years after root canal treatment and placement of a permanent filling.
In addition, crowns can be used to strengthen a cracked tooth and protect the dentin and nerves in cases of increased enamel wear.
Another indication is the installation of a bridge prosthesis. In this case, the supporting teeth adjacent to the gap in the dental arch are covered with crowns.
In some cases, crowns are used to improve the aesthetic properties of teeth—correcting their shape, color, and size.
Contraindications:
- Allergy to metal (rare)
- Crowded teeth (can be fixed with orthodontic treatment)
- Severe enamel wear due to bruxism
- Severe periodontal disease
- Insufficient height of the crown part of the tooth
- Children and adolescents (installation may adversely affect the development of the dentofacial system)
Before starting treatment, the specialists at Club 32 always carefully assess the clinical situation and select the appropriate type of prosthesis.
Stages of metal-ceramic dental prosthetics:
- Consultation, examination, and diagnosis
- Preparation and grinding of teeth (if necessary)
- Taking impressions or digital scanning
- Fabrication of a metal-ceramic crown in a dental laboratory
- Fitting, adjustment, and cementing
The process usually takes 7–10 days. The orthopedists at our clinic pay special attention to preparing for the installation of metal-ceramic crowns on the front teeth in order to achieve a perfect match in color and shape.
