Removable dental prosthetics: high-quality and affordable restoration of chewing function and smile aesthetics
Removable dentures are an outdated but still popular option for restoring the dentition in cases of complete or partial edentulism (absence of teeth) in the upper, lower, or both jaws.
Once upon a time, this type of prosthesis was the only option for restoring chewing function and jaw aesthetics. Today, there are much more modern, comfortable, and aesthetic options for reconstructing the dentition, but removable prostheses are still popular due to their affordability.
The orthopedists at Club 32, a family dental clinic in the Holosiivskyi district of Kyiv, have many successful cases of manufacturing and installing removable dentures for patients of all ages in their portfolio.
We take an individual approach to prosthetics, developing a unique treatment plan for each patient that allows us to manufacture dentures that take into account their specific characteristics and wishes at an affordable price.
Types of removable dentures
Plate dentures
The most classic option. They consist of a lightweight pink acrylic base that imitates the gums, into which artificial teeth are inserted — most often also made of acrylic or composite. The teeth are matched to the color and shape of natural teeth, and the denture itself can cover the entire jaw (in cases of complete edentulism) or have the form of an "insert" for several teeth.
This type of denture for the upper jaw has one significant drawback — it completely or almost completely covers the palate. This significantly impairs the sense of taste and temperature of food.
The advantages include lightness and affordability.
Immediate dentures
They are also called butterfly dentures. They are installed immediately after tooth extraction. They are made in advance based on the patient's impressions so that on the day of extraction, aesthetics and, partially, chewing function can be restored immediately.
Such dentures:
- help avoid psychological discomfort due to missing teeth,
- protect wounds after tooth extraction
- maintain the shape of the gums and face
Over time, after the tissues have healed, the immediate prosthesis is usually replaced with a permanent one.
Clasp dentures
The main feature is a metal openwork arch (in German, "bügel") connecting the left and right parts of the denture. On the lower jaw, it runs where the natural teeth remain (mainly in the front of the jaw), and on the upper jaw, it runs along the palate.
The main advantage is the even distribution of load across the entire jaw, which prevents trauma to the gums and preserves the remaining teeth for longer. In addition, the almost completely open palate (when prosthetics are placed on the upper jaw) provides the patient with a full sense of taste and temperature of food.
For patients with allergies to metal alloys, we offer a special type of clasp denture called "Quadrotti." This is an Italian design with a bioplastic-coated clasp that eliminates the risk of allergies.
The price of such dentures is higher than that of plate dentures, but they are much more comfortable and preserve the sensation of taste and temperature of food.
Clasp dentures are classified by the type of attachment:
on clasps
The prosthesis is attached to the patient's teeth with special metal hooks (clasps). They do not damage the gums or teeth, but are quite visible in the mouth. This does not have the best effect on the aesthetics of the smile:
on attachments
To attach such a prosthesis, crowns with locks (attachments) are placed on the adjacent teeth, to which the prosthesis is attached. This type of attachment is invisible when smiling and also makes the prosthesis much more comfortable than a clasp, firmly fixing it in the mouth. In addition, the prosthesis only needs to be removed from the locks for hygienic care no more than once a day.
The disadvantage is the additional load on the supporting teeth. At the time of prosthetics, they must be strong enough, otherwise they will also need to be prosthetized after a while.
Due to the greater technological complexity, the price of such prostheses is slightly higher:
Telescopic attachment
In this case, all remaining teeth are ground down and fitted with metal-ceramic crowns. After that, a full jaw prosthesis is made, in which the corresponding "crowned" artificial teeth are equipped with entry holes. When the crowns are put on, they fit tightly into the openings. As a result, the patient gets full jaw functionality without putting extra stress on the remaining teeth.
When is a removable denture recommended?
- Complete absence of teeth on one or both jaws
- Impossibility of installing implants for medical reasons
- The need for temporary restoration after tooth extraction
- As a budget option for restoring chewing function and smile aesthetics when financial resources are limited
Stages of installing dentures
It usually takes about two weeks to make a removable denture, and the patient needs to visit the Club 32 dental clinic four times.
1st visit
We take impressions for bite blocks. The blocks themselves are made by the laboratory within a few days.
2nd visit
The patient bites down on the finished pads with their usual bite. This results in an exact copy of the bite, which is used in the laboratory to make plaster models that are checked on a special device called an occludator. Next, based on these models, wax dental saddles are formed, into which dentures are inserted. De facto, this is the future denture, simply made of soft material.
3rd visit
Fitting of the preliminary version. If no problems are found, as is often the case, the preliminary version is sent back to the laboratory, where the wax is replaced with plastic.
4th visit
Fitting of the finished denture. Final fine adjustments and tweaks.
The thing about removable dentures is that the patient in the chair doesn't always feel the discomfort. That's why rubbing, pressure, and discomfort in the first few days of wearing dentures are pretty common. Because of this, we always warn patients that they might have to come back a few more times to fix any issues.
How to care for removable dentures
Proper care prolongs the life of the dentures and maintains oral health. Basic recommendations:
- Clean dentures twice a day with a soft brush and a special cleaning agent
- Remove the dentures at night to allow the mucous membrane to rest
- Store them in a container with water or an antiseptic solution
- Visit your dentist regularly for checkups and adjustments
If you decide to get removable dentures, the doctors and staff at Club 32 will do everything possible to make them as comfortable as possible and ensure they last as long as possible.
