For the filling to hold securely, the damage to the tooth must not exceed 40%. If the tooth is more severely damaged, the only reliable option for its restoration is to install a crown.
A crown covers the tooth on all sides, seals weakened tissue, and helps preserve chewing function until the tooth is naturally replaced. This is important not only for nutrition, but also for the formation of proper bite, diction, and chewing habits.
An important advantage of children's crowns is that they protect the tooth at the gum line, where children often develop recurrent caries. In addition, these orthopedic structures help maintain bite height and reduce the risk of overloading adjacent teeth, especially when a child chews predominantly on one side.

Metal crowns for children are recommended when the crown part of a baby tooth is so damaged that a filling will not hold or will quickly break down under chewing pressure. The main indications are: extensive caries with significant tissue loss, recurrent caries around old fillings, multiple lesions with active caries, and tooth restoration after pulpitis treatment, when the tooth becomes more fragile. An additional indication may be increased wear of baby teeth or the need to restore a tooth after trauma if the root is preserved. A crown also helps with severe enamel defects when tooth tissue is vulnerable and requires long-term protection.
Contraindications are situations where it is no longer advisable to preserve the tooth: severe pathological root resorption, significant root destruction, or mobility indicating an unfavorable prognosis. Installation is not performed if there is a confirmed allergy to metal alloy components. Acute inflammatory processes of the mucous membrane and gums in the treatment area may be a temporary limitation. In such cases, it is necessary to stabilize the condition of the young patient before starting treatment. Also, a crown is usually not indicated if the baby tooth is in the late stage of physiological replacement and is about to fall out.
Treatment begins with consultation and diagnosis: the doctor assesses the degree of destruction, contact surfaces, bite, and gum condition, and an X-ray is taken if necessary. Then the tooth is prepared: the affected tissues are removed, and a shape is formed that allows the crown to fit tightly without traumatizing the gums. If needed, caries or its complications are treated first. Next, a crown of the appropriate size is selected, fitted, and adjusted for height and contact, after which the crown is fixed with dental cement. Finally, the dentist checks the bite, gives care recommendations, and schedules a follow-up appointment.
We pay attention not only to restoring the child's dental health, but also to their psychological comfort. Before starting treatment, an introductory visit is mandatory, during which the doctor establishes contact with the young patient, plays with them, shows them the instruments, and explains in simple words what they will be doing and why it is necessary.
After that, the doctor conducts a thorough diagnosis: X-ray examination, assessment of the condition of the enamel, gums, and permanent teeth. This is necessary in order to choose the optimal type of crown.
The procedure takes one or two visits and is usually performed under local anesthesia, which is safe for young patients. If necessary, the dentist may use sedation to make the child feel calm.
