Teeth fluoridation in children

Fluoridation of teeth in children is useful for strengthening enamel and reducing the risk of caries (and we remember that healthy milk teeth are the key to healthy permanent teeth). The procedure is simple, safe, and painless. After professional dental hygiene, the dentist applies a special fluoride-containing mixture to the child's teeth. This is a simple preventive measure that will help save a lot of resources in the future. At Club 32, we will do everything for the health of your children — we will take care of them professionally and create a warm atmosphere.

Teeth fluoridation in children — strengthening enamel and effective protection against tooth decay

The goal of modern caries prevention in children is to strengthen enamel and reduce the risk of its demineralization. One of the most effective methods in this area is fluoridation — also known as fluorosis or remineralization — of children's milk teeth and permanent teeth. In fact, this involves applying a special fluoride-containing varnish to previously cleaned and dried teeth, which deeply affects the enamel and increases its resistance to the destructive effects of acids and cariogenic bacteria.

The doctors at the Club 32 clinic in the Holosiivskyi district of Kyiv have extensive experience in performing dental fluoridation on children. At our dental clinic, this procedure is performed taking into account the child's age, the condition of the enamel, and the characteristics of the primary and permanent teeth. Timely fluoridation helps prevent early caries and maintain oral health in children and adolescents.

How is children's teeth fluoridation performed?

There are two most common methods of remineralization: simple and deep fluoridation of children's teeth. The choice of method depends on the parents' wishes, the condition of the enamel, the age of the child, and the risk of caries.

Here's how it's done:

Preparing the teeth for the procedure (done for both methods)

Before applying the strengthening compound, the dentist gently cleans the surface of the teeth. This is necessary so that the fluoride is evenly distributed over the enamel and provides maximum protection. After cleaning, the teeth are dried with a soft stream of air. At the end of the preparatory stage, the doctor assesses the sensitivity and condition of the enamel.

Simple fluoridation of teeth in children is the standard and most common method

Simple fluoridation involves a single application of professional fluoride varnish, fluoride gel, or fluoride foam to the enamel.

Stages of the procedure:

  • application of a fluoride-containing compound to a clean and dry tooth surface
  • Formation of a protective film — the varnish hardens within a few seconds and begins to release fluoride gradually
  • strengthening of the enamel — minerals penetrate the surface layer, making it denser and more resistant to acids

This method of fluoridation is suitable for both baby teeth and permanent teeth. We recommend it for children with early signs of demineralization, increased enamel sensitivity, or immature permanent teeth. The procedure takes a few minutes and is completely painless. In the experience of our hygienists, it is ideal for fluoridation of teeth, even in very young children.

Deep fluoridation — enhanced protection for weak or porous enamel

Deep fluoridation of teeth is used in cases where children need the most intensive enamel strengthening possible. The method is based on a two-step application:

  • The first component fills the micropores of the enamel with calcium fluoride
  • The second component, an activator, "seals" these crystals deep into the enamel structure

This protocol creates a long-term supply of minerals that are gradually released upon contact with saliva and prolong the protective effect. Deep fluoride treatment of teeth is strongly recommended for children in the following cases:

  • multiple areas of demineralization
  • soft or porous enamel
  • after the eruption of permanent teeth, when they are most vulnerable
  • high risk of early caries

Completion of the procedure and recommendations

After coating the teeth with fluoride, the dentist explains to children and their parents which drinks and foods are best to avoid in the first few hours after the procedure so that the strengthening layer can fully stabilize. We also select home care products with the right fluoride concentration so that the enamel protection lasts as long as possible and works in the best possible way.

Modern fluoridation of children's teeth significantly reduces the risk of caries, strengthens enamel, and protects baby and permanent teeth during the most vulnerable periods of growth.

Contraindications for fluoridation of baby teeth

Despite its effectiveness, fluoridation in children has a number of temporary limitations. The procedure is not performed in cases of allergy to the components, severe enamel defects, acute gum inflammation, or active caries. If there are contraindications, the doctor will offer alternative options for strengthening the enamel.

At our clinic, fluoride treatment for children is only performed after a doctor's examination and assessment of the condition of the mucous membrane to rule out the risk of irritation and ensure the correct choice of composition. The decision is made on an individual basis, based on the child's needs.

Benefits of fluoridation for children

The main advantage of the procedure is the strengthening of the enamel structure and a reduced risk of caries. Fluoridation of teeth gives children additional protection against caries, makes their enamel more resistant to destruction, reduces sensitivity, and prevents the appearance of white spots. After treatment, resistance to acid exposure improves, which is especially important during the period of tooth replacement. Teeth fluoridation allows children to maintain the health of their primary and permanent teeth for a long time and reduces the need for complex invasive medical interventions. At the Club 32 clinic, after the procedure, parents always receive recommendations from experienced specialists on home care, which helps to prolong the protective effect.
