Fissure sealing in children — reliable protection for baby teeth
In an age of growing popularity of sweets and fast food, special, advanced protection is needed to preserve the health of children's teeth.
Fissure sealing, together with good oral hygiene at home, guarantees this.
Fissures are the most vulnerable parts of teeth to caries. These are natural grooves (depressions) on the chewing surface. Fissures are difficult to clean, so plaque often accumulates in them and cariogenic bacteria can develop. Fissure sealing is a preventive procedure during which the dentist fills the fissures with a special sealant, thereby blocking bacteria from accessing them. Modern dental sealants are not only safe for children's health. They contain trace elements that nourish tooth enamel for several years. This preventive technology supports the natural structure of the tooth and reduces the likelihood of early caries even with unstable hygiene habits.
Lyudmila Ivanovna Romygailo, a pediatric dentist at Club 32, a family dentistry clinic in the Holosiivskyi district of Kyiv, has extensive experience in sealing fissures in primary and permanent teeth in children. She loves and understands children, and they are always happy to see her.
Our clinic has created the ideal conditions for your child to feel calm and relaxed, both before and during treatment, so that they are not afraid of having their teeth treated. The fairy-tale interior of the children's office, introductory visits, cartoons during procedures, toys, and certificates as gifts—all this turns your child's visit to us into a joyful and exciting adventure.
Indications and contraindications for fissure sealing in children
Since sealing the fissures in children's teeth significantly increases the likelihood of keeping them healthy, we recommend that all children undergo this procedure. Global practice shows that fissures in baby teeth should be sealed at the age of 2.5-3.5 years. Sealing of permanent teeth in children should be carried out immediately after their chewing surfaces have fully erupted. This usually occurs at the age of 6-7 years.
In addition, there are clinical cases where sealing is strictly indicated. These are:
- abnormally deep fissures
- weak enamel mineralization
- early signs of demineralization (the appearance of irregularly shaped spots on the tooth enamel)
- hereditary predisposition to caries
- bruxism
- preparation for braces
Contraindications include:
- caries that has already begun
- tooth trauma (chips on the chewing surface)
- acute inflammation
- abnormally wide fissures (in this case, the sealant will not be able to hold on to them)
Stages of sealing baby teeth in children
There are two types of fissure sealing in children:
- invasive (with minimal widening of the fissure)
- non-invasive (without such expansion)
Club 32 has a clear protocol for both types of procedures. First, the surface of the teeth is professionally cleaned of plaque. If necessary, minimal opening of the fissure is performed using ultrasound or a gentle drill (invasive sealing). Then the enamel is etched with a gel to increase adhesion, rinsed, and thoroughly dried. A sealant is applied to the prepared surface, distributing it evenly over the entire relief. After applying the sealant, it is exposed to an ultraviolet lamp and polished. In the final stage, a fluoride-containing varnish is applied to the teeth.
As a result of this treatment, children's teeth, both primary and permanent, receive an additional coating that reliably protects them from caries.
Advantages of sealing children's teeth at Club 32
At our clinic, we pay special attention to the quality of materials and the precision of each stage of treatment. We use only high-quality certified sealants that are highly resistant to abrasion and provide reliable closure of even the deepest fissures. The materials used have optimal fluidity, allowing them to completely fill anatomical depressions without disturbing the relief.
An important aspect is that the procedure does not cause discomfort, is suitable for children of different ages, and helps to build trust in the dentist.
Our doctors use modern equipment for thorough surface preparation, which makes the sealing of children's teeth as durable as possible.
We also care about the psychological and physical comfort of our young patients and their parents. We have created conditions for families to undergo all medical procedures calmly and without stress.
