Indications and contraindications for dental fillings in children
Filling children's teeth is indicated for caries, cracks, trauma, or increased enamel wear. In all these cases, a filling placed in a child's tooth helps the primary tooth to "live out its life" peacefully and also allows the permanent tooth and the entire dentofacial system to develop harmoniously. If the caries has gone too deep and there is a risk of pulp inflammation, more complex endodontic treatment may be required, followed by filling.
Contraindications include acute infections and severe somatic diseases.
Our doctor always carefully assesses the condition of the child's oral cavity and, in each specific case, decides on the advisability of placing a filling on a milk tooth, based on the clinical picture and the results of examinations.
Types of children's fillings
Modern dentistry offers several types of materials for restoring children's teeth. The most common are light-curing composites, which are durable and aesthetic. They allow for high-quality filling of the front baby teeth, restoring their natural color. Glass ionomer cements are often used for chewing teeth, as they release fluoride and protect children's teeth from recurrent caries. There are also special brightly colored fillings for children. Children like them—they perceive them as decorations and they help reduce anxiety during treatment. Depending on the age and clinical situation, the dentist selects the best option to ensure reliability and safety.
If it becomes necessary to fill permanent teeth in children, this is done with white light-curing and glass ionomer composites.
Stages of filling children's baby teeth
The treatment process consists of several standardized steps. First, the dentist examines the tooth and, if necessary, administers anesthesia and sedates the child. Then the affected tissue is removed and a cavity is formed under the baby tooth filling. After that, the doctor applies a therapeutic lining. It protects the pulp (nerve) from irritation by the filling material, reduces tooth sensitivity, contains calcium and other components that stimulate dentin regeneration, and also serves as an additional barrier against the penetration of bacteria. The filling material is applied to the lining in layers. Each layer is "cured" with a special lamp, causing it to harden. Finally, the tooth is polished so that the restored tooth looks natural and does not interfere with biting.
The stages of treatment for filling permanent teeth in children are similar, except that more durable filling materials are used.
