Photopolymer filling

Photopolymer fillings were once a revolutionary invention in dentistry for ensuring the aesthetics of fillings. And now this type of filling is the most common.
Photopolymer fillings are made from high-tech composite materials. They can be used for both artistic restoration of teeth, ensuring a perfect appearance, and restoration of the surface and shape of chewing teeth. The material is resistant to wear and chipping, and the service life of such a filling is up to 10 years with high-quality treatment and proper care.

Filling teeth with photopolymer — reliability for many years and flawless aesthetics

Restoring teeth with photopolymer fillings not only effectively eliminates the effects of caries, but also achieves flawless aesthetics of the dentition. That is why patients who care about the health and beauty of their smile are increasingly choosing photopolymer fillings.

This procedure involves minimal intervention—only the damaged tissue is removed. Healthy tooth structures remain intact during treatment and continue to function normally.

The wide color range of photopolymer materials—another advantage of this type of filling—allows the dentist to restore the damaged tooth so that it does not differ from its neighbors in the dental arch.

In addition, a photopolymer or, as it is sometimes called, a light-cured filling does not require a long recovery period. Immediately after the procedure, the patient can eat, drink, and return to their normal lifestyle.

The therapists at Club 32, a family dental clinic in the Holosiivskyi district of Kyiv, have countless successful restorations of teeth with photopolymer fillings for patients of all ages in their portfolio.

We practice an individual approach to filling – for each patient, we develop a unique treatment plan that allows us to place a photopolymer filling taking into account the specifics of the clinical situation, wishes, and at an affordable price. In addition, you can pay for the filling in installments and without overpaying.

We do everything to make your treatment effective, affordable, and comfortable.

Indications and contraindications for photopolymer filling

Indications:

  • Carious lesions of the teeth: photopolymer material is widely used in the treatment of both superficial and medium to deep caries. It allows the anatomical shape and color of the tooth to be restored with high precision
  • Enamel chips and cracks: composite effectively replaces lost tooth fragments in cases of trauma, fissures, and cracks, including in the incisors and canines. The dentist selects a shade that is identical to natural enamel
  • Hard tissue abrasion: used for non-carious lesions — wedge-shaped defects, erosion, abfraction, increased abrasion, especially in cases of parafunction (e.g., bruxism). The filling protects the dentin and reduces sensitivity
  • Replacement of old fillings: suitable for replacing amalgam, glass ionomer, and outdated composite fillings. Modern photopolymers have better adhesion, less shrinkage, and high wear resistance

Contraindications:

  • Severe tooth decay: extensive loss of the crown requires orthopedic restoration (inlay, crown), as a filling will not provide sufficient strength
  • Intolerance to components: some patients may have an allergic reaction to monomers or photoinitiators
  • Inability to isolate the field from moisture: in cases of excessive salivation or inability to work with a rubber dam, the adhesion of the composite will be compromised

Features of tooth filling with photopolymer

The installation of a photopolymer filling is carried out strictly in stages. Each step affects the quality of the result and the service life of the restoration.

  • Examination and diagnosis
  • A visual assessment and targeted X-ray are performed. This helps to identify hidden areas of caries and calculate the extent of restoration
  • Anesthesia
  • If necessary, local anesthesia is used, especially if the caries is deep
  • Removal of affected tissue
  • The caries is completely cleaned out, and a cavity with clear boundaries is formed for the light-curing filling material
  • Isolation
  • A cofferdam or cotton retraction with suction is used — moisture can interfere with adhesion
  • Etching and bonding
  • The surface of the enamel and dentin is etched and treated with an adhesive system — this strengthens the bond
  • Material application
  • The photopolymer is applied in layers, each layer is cured. This prevents shrinkage and ensures strength
  • Shaping and polishing
  • The filling is given a precise anatomical shape. The bite is checked and corrected if necessary
  • Polishing
  • The final stage is to smooth the surface to minimize plaque accumulation and extend the service life

Modern photopolymer fillings are resistant to abrasion, match the color of the tooth, and do not darken over time. In our clinic, we prefer to use the latest generation of materials.

Advantages and disadvantages of light-cured fillings

This type of filling has a number of significant advantages:

  • high aesthetics: indistinguishable from natural teeth
  • Durability: withstands chewing pressure
  • durability: guaranteed service life of up to 3 years, actual service life of up to 10 years
  • biocompatibility: does not cause irritation or allergies
  • accuracy: the anatomical shape is recreated with high precision

There are virtually no disadvantages. Sometimes the cost of photopolymer fillings in Kyiv and other cities in Ukraine is considered a disadvantage. This is argued by the fact that the price of light-cured fillings is higher than that of amalgam or glass ionomer. However, this is a false comparison, since photopolymers are incomparably more aesthetic and reliable than the analogues mentioned. In addition, it is worth remembering that the cost of dental services in our country is incomparably lower than in Europe.

Recommendations for caring for photopolymer fillings

To ensure that fillings last a long time:

  • carefully observe oral hygiene at home
  • visit a professional hygienist twice a year
  • avoid excessive stress on the restored tooth
  • Visit your dentist at least twice a year for preventive checkups
  • use gentle care products (medium-hard toothbrush, non-abrasive toothpaste)

By following these simple recommendations, your light-cured filling will serve you well for many years.

If you notice sensitivity, dark spots, or changes in the shape of your chewing teeth, don't delay your visit to the dentist. Treatment at our clinic means comfort, attentive care from our doctors, and a guarantee of long-lasting results. Our dentists have many years of experience and use the most modern materials and equipment.
