Composite fillings – affordability, reliability, and aesthetics
Modern dentistry offers a wide range of materials for tooth restoration, but composite fillings are the most popular.
This is one of the most modern types of fillings, consisting of two main components:
- a polymer matrix – the "foundation" of the material made of synthetic resins, most often based on bisphenol-A-glycidyl methacrylate (Bis-GMA), urethane dimethacrylate (UDMA), or triethylene glycol dimethacrylate (TEGDMA)
- inorganic fillers (glass fiber, quartz, zirconium)
Thanks to this composition, such fillings combine strength, good adhesive properties, affordability, and impeccable aesthetics, as close as possible to natural enamel. They harden under the influence of light or a chemical catalyst, which allows the dentist to accurately model the shape of the restored tooth. That is why this type of filling is widely used in therapeutic dentistry for both chewing and front teeth.
The therapists at Club 32, a family dental clinic in the Holosiivskyi district of Kyiv, have countless successful composite tooth restorations for patients of all ages in their portfolio.
We take an individual approach to fillings – we develop a unique treatment plan for each patient, allowing us to place composite fillings that take into account the specifics of the clinical situation and the patient's wishes, at an affordable price. In addition, you can pay for your fillings in installments without any extra charges.
We do everything to ensure that your treatment is effective, affordable, and comfortable.
Indications and contraindications for composite fillings
Indications:
- Caries of any stage
- These fillings are effective in restoring both superficial enamel lesions and deep carious cavities with dentin damage. Composite allows you to reliably fill even complex forms of destruction, restoring the anatomy of the tooth
- Enamel chips
- Composite is easy to model and accurately replicates the natural contour of the tooth, allowing for quick and aesthetic repair of the defect without the need for a crown
- Tooth wear
- In cases of pathological abrasion of hard tooth tissue (e.g., due to bruxism or malocclusion), composite is used to restore lost volume, normalize bite height, and protect exposed dentin from external irritants
- Replacement of unsightly old fillings
- Amalgam or darkened fillings spoil the appearance of teeth, especially in the smile zone. Modern composites are matched exactly to the color of the enamel and provide high aesthetics with complete restoration tightness
- The need to restore the shape and color of the tooth, especially in the smile zone
- Composite is actively used in aesthetic restoration. It is effective when it is necessary to change the shape of teeth, close diastemas and gaps, lengthen the crown part, and correct the color without grinding for veneers or crowns
Contraindications:
- Inability to ensure dryness of the working field
- Absolute isolation from saliva and blood is required for reliable composite fixation. If it is impossible to install a cofferdam or use a saliva ejector, the quality of adhesion suffers, and other types of restoration are preferred
- Extensive defects with little tooth structure remaining
- If most of the crown is destroyed, a composite filling may not withstand chewing forces. In such cases, the dentist recommends microprosthetics (inlays, onlays) or orthopedic treatment (crowns)
- Allergy to composite components
- Although modern materials are hypoallergenic, individual intolerance is possible. If you are allergic to resins, polymerization initiators, or other composite components, your dentist will select alternative materials
How composite fillings are placed
First, the dentist cleans the affected tissue, isolates the tooth with a cofferdam, and prepares the cleaned surface for filling. Then, an adhesive is applied and the filling is laid in layers. During the laying process, each layer of the filling is polymerized with a lamp. After completing the restoration, the dentist grinds and polishes the tooth surface. At Club 32, the composite restoration procedure takes 30 to 60 minutes. The duration depends on the extent of the damage. To place a composite filling on the front teeth, dentists select a shade of composite that matches the natural color of the patient's enamel.
Advantages and disadvantages
Advantages:
- high aesthetics
- reliable adhesion
- minimal tissue preparation
- Quick results
- You can eat and drink immediately after the filling procedure
- Affordable price of composite fillings
- Compatibility with digital planning technologies
Disadvantages:
- may wear off over time
- May become stained by food over time
- Less durable compared to ceramic restorations
Service life of composite fillings
Most manufacturers guarantee a service life of 3 years for composite fillings. But in reality, such fillings can last 5, 7, or even 10 years. Durability is influenced by the quality of the material, the skill of the dentist, the patient's hygiene, and their bite.
In order to maximize the service life of composite restorations, we strongly recommend visiting a professional hygienist twice a year. In addition, regular preventive visits to the dentist, also twice a year, will help to notice the wear and tear of the filling in time and make corrections.
Composite restoration is a modern, reliable, and aesthetic solution to many dental problems.
At our clinic, you are guaranteed to receive European-level dental care, fillings with the most modern materials, and cordial service.
