Main methods of tooth augmentation

The tooth restoration method is selected on an individual basis - it depends on the degree of crown damage, the condition of the root, the bite, and the patient’s goals (aesthetics, durability, restoration of function). In modern dentistry, several main approaches are most commonly used:

Direct composite bonding (cosmetic restoration).

The most popular method for chips, cracks, and aesthetic defects. The dentist applies a light-curing material layer by layer, shapes the anatomical form, polishes the surface, and selects the shade so that the restoration looks as natural as possible. The advantage of this method is speed (often completed in a single visit) and minimal invasiveness.

This approach is often chosen when it is necessary to build up the front teeth or perform a local correction of the shape.

Root-supported restoration (post + restoration / inlay).

If the crown portion is significantly damaged but the root is intact, a root reinforcement is used. A fiberglass post is placed inside the root canal or an inlay is fabricated, after which the tooth’s shape is restored. This method increases the strength of the restored tooth and reduces the risk of re-fracture.

Prosthetic restoration (veneers, crowns).

If composite bonding does not ensure durability, the dentist may recommend an indirect restoration - a veneer or crown. Such restorations are fabricated in a laboratory and are characterized by high strength and consistent aesthetics. This method is particularly relevant for large defects and teeth under increased stress.
